Sadio Mane has today been crowned as the Premier League’s Player of the Month for August.
The Liverpool forward scooped the accolade after scoring in each of his three appearances in the competition to begin 2017-18 in style. He scored in each of the 3-3 draw at Watford, 1-0 win against Crystal Palace and 4-0 victory over Arsenal at Anfield.
Mane saw off competition from Reds teammate Mohamed Salah, as well as Phil Jones, Romelu Lukaku, Henrik Mkhitaryan (all Manchester United), Jonas Lossl (Huddersfield Town) and Alvaro Morata (Chelsea).
The Liverpool forward was presented with the award at Melwood on Friday and said: “I am very happy to accept this award because it means you are in a good way, but I am trying hard to improve.
“I want to say thanks to all of my teammates because without them I am nothing.
“I am happy with my start to the season. Everyone loves to score goals for their team, and it gives me more confidence.”
Mane is once again is ready to start as Liverpool travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City on Sunday.
His teammate Dejan Lovren has hailed his partnership up front with Liverpool’s new boy Mo Salah, who beat him to the Liverpool player of the month award, and Roberto Firmino as the best in the top flight.
“I’m a Liverpool player and, of course, for me they are the best,” said the Reds defender. “They caused Arsenal a lot of problems.
“It’s a long season and we will see towards the end of the season who will be in the first place, but you can see the difference those three players make.
“I’m lucky that I don’t have to face them very often in training. It tends to be the guys, who aren’t in the first XI.
“They are amazing. It would be quite difficult for any defender when you are up against Salah, Mane and Firmino.
“Going forward, we really showed our quality. We scored four goals against Arsenal and could have had more.
“We need everyone to stay healthy during the international break and come back together and perform like that again against Manchester City.”
