Jose Mourinho’s side made it three wins out of three as they go into the international break sitting top of the EPL table.
This was not as high scoring as the crushing 4-0 victories over West Ham United and Swansea City, but that arguably made it more impressive. This was an important win for them given their recent failings at home.
Leicester City tried to make it a difficult game for United as they defended superbly and when Kasper Schmeichel saved Romelu Lukaku’s penalty in the second half, this threatened to turn into another one of those frustrating days that sucked the life out of United’s Title challenge last season.
Man Utd though, clearly have more strength in depth now. Lukaku didn’t particularly have a good, but Mourinho was able to bring on Marcus Rashford, the young England international was able to find the net few minutes after his introduction for Juan Mata.
Leicester’s spirits were broken and another substitute, Marouane Fellani, doubled Utd’s Lead, deflecting in Jesse Lingard’s cross with his hip. It brought a difficult game to a successful conclusion.
These were the kind of games Man U repeatedly failed to win last season, which is why they coughed out a whooping £75 million on Lukaku. One of the Belgian strengths at Everton was that he had a good scoring record against the supposedly smaller clubs, the same teams United had developed a nasty habit of struggling to break down.
Whether it’s the presence of Nemanja Matic playing behind him or Perhaps Lukaku in front of him or Neymar being more expensive than him or a combination of all three and more Paul Pogba really does now look every bit the player United paid £89m for him to be.
This is a very good start for United as they are yet to concede but baring in mind that United also won their opening three games last term a good start is all it is.
